Two brothers were attacked in their home in the Oak Bowery Community over the weekend, leaving officers searching for suspects. According to Jasper County Sheriff Keith Murphy, a medical call was placed around 5:39 p.m., Saturday, March 31.

Sheriff Murphy said that once deputies arrived on the scene, they found two black males severely beaten. One man, George Lee McCullum, 62, was deceased. His brother, Charles McCullum, 64, was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Sheriff Murphy said that he has heard that Charles McCullum is doing better and will hopefully recover.

As of Tuesday, a motive had not been established, but the possibility of a robbery has not been ruled out. Sheriff Murphy said that it appeared that there was some money missing from the home. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation sent a crime unit to process the crime scene Saturday. The MBI is assisting the Sheriff’s Department with the investigation.

Sheriff Murphy said that the department is interviewing several people and persons of interest. He asks that anyone with information contact the Sheriff’s Department to help bring those responsible to justice. Anyone with information can call the Sheriff’s Office at 601-764-2588 or call the Crime Line at 601-764-3784.
