“I’m reading the article about East Jasper School District and the discussion of transfer of students. The point that catches my eye is that how these transfers of these students could effect the budget. Um, the school board must not have made clear to the press that they purchased extra to send up here to North Jasper County to pick up these students and paying drivers to come up here every single day in those special school buses to pick up one or two students. Although these students are not getting on the bus; they’re being taken to Enterprise by their parents. The school buses are still running. Those school buses cost a lot of money. The gas for those school buses cost a lot of money, and paying the driver costs a lot of money.
So those extra school buses they bought, um; it doesn’t justify the amount of money that it would take to make the transfer. It would be cheaper to just let the students transfer than paying for the extra gas, extra bus driver and all the extra buses because they’re having to send three different buses up here just to pick up 20 children that are asking for the transfer, if it’s that many. Thank you.”–-Female

“What kind of justice system is this we have when you can, uh, get accomplished of murder and still don’t have to spend 24 hours in jail? What is the... department thinking about?

“I’d just like to say thank you to the responsible parties for fixin’ up the artesian well. It is looking better every day, and to the public out there, please help take care of it. Keep it clean. Don’t trash it up and make it look like it did before. Take pride in what they’ve done for us. Thank you.” -–Female

“If anyone is asked to do work at the Bay Springs High School, please get a purchase order or contract. This would ensure that you would get paid for the services you have rendered. Thank you.” ––Female

“I recently visited Bay Springs High School, and as a concerned grandmother, I am calling to let the community know about our school system. The teachers, administrators and staff are doing a great job. I want us a parents, grandparents and the community to support our schools.”––Female

“Ok, folks. The last two elections have eliminated dozens of candidates. Time to get your signs off of the roadways, off of the telephone poles and out of the yards. Get ‘em down. We’re tired of looking at ‘em.”––Female

“As important as this election is, I was very disappointed that there was no ballot for the run-off election printed in the paper last week, nor was there even a reminder to the voters about the election. This information should have been plastered across the front page. Elderly voters especially depend on being able to read about who was in the run-off so they can make up there mind and get in and out of the polling place as quickly as possible. All of the support that all of those poor candidates gave you by purchasing ads for weeks and this is the thanks they get? I love the Jasper County News, but I must say, shame on you.”––Female
Editor’s note: The Jasper County News noted run-off candidates in the August 3rd edition of the Jasper County News and printed a sample ballot in the August 10th edition. While readers were reminded in several candidates’ ads to vote in the August 23 run-off, the Jasper County News will strive to better please readers by reminding them of upcoming elections.

“ Yes, I am, um, a female from Stringer and I’m in the Red Apple every day, and I never hear any political talk. And I’m calling about the statement that was made in this week’s paper about Johnny Rowell, everybody downing him at the Red Apple. I’ve never heard anybody downing anybody at the Red Apple. That’s a fine, upstanding store. Goodbye.”––Female

“A family is missing their sweet dog. He is an eight-year-old, red dachshund mix that hopes on three legs because of medical problems. He has on a green, sparkle collar. Please call 601-335-1075 if you find this dog or have any information about the dog. Always check with your local, volunteer animal shelter if your dog is missing. Thank you.”––Female

“I want to encourage our schools to support our bands. You won’t find 60-year-olds still enjoying football the way a musician can continue to play. I appreciate the parents who make it possible for their students to play in the band even when the school doesn’t.”––Female

“Yes, I’m a male from Stringer, and I think they need to use Red Apple as a store instead of a campaigning office down there. Because all they do is sit there and they down Johnny Rowell when they ain’t no better than he is.” ––Male

“I just attended a local, uh, high school football game at which the announcer, on two occasions, requested that all fans present vote for a particular individual for sheriff. Um, I don’t think this is right. All candidates should have been given the same opportunity. Um, or the same voice in a public domain like that. That’s what’s wrong with Jasper County politics now. Thank you.”––Female

“I just want to remind people that when they go out to vote for their candidate next Tuesday to remember that a supervisor does a lot more than just pave roads and deliver dirt. There’s a lot more community involvement decisions. Who do you want representing us to corporations and things like that?”––Female
––––––––––––––––––––
“Uh, Beat One Supervisor, would you please get to Antioch on County Road 23 and at least fill the holes there before it tears the front-ends out of our vehicles. And we have a lot of repairs or we wind up hitting somebody head-on or side-swipping, trying to fix the holes. Thank you.”––Female

“Whelp. I see all these churches in the coalition up there, telling people who to vote for. Well, I wonder if they gonna pay these taxes ‘cause to be tax exempt I didn’t think you was supposed to get involved in politics. I think the IRS needs to look into all this now ‘cause all these preachers need to pay taxes, these churches and keep some of they money like they did to mine ‘cause I don’t get involved in politics. They not supposed to. They still do it. They breaking the law. Thank you. Goodbye. Anyway, nobody listen to no preachers ‘round Jasper County no way. Look how Jasper County heading nowadays. Nobody listens to preachers. Goodbye.” ––Talk Back Jack

“And another thing I don’t believe in. All these little ole girls runnin’ ‘round here talk ‘bout they don’t believe in birth control. They don’t believe in abortion. Well, you believe in the welfare system, where everybody support your children. Well, listen God has a version of birth control. It’s called starvation. It ain’t our place to support you. Goodbye. And your children. Goodbye. Starvation done been around since the dawn of day. If you can’t support your children, they’ll starve. Thank you. Goodbye.”––Talk Back Jack

“As a parent I am excited and proud that JCJC is coming to our community and building a new complex. I appreciate whoever was involved in making that happen. It shows Jasper County’s commitment to education. Add to that, my children have an opportunity to attend JCJC at no cost. Wow, we are truly blessed to be living in Jasper County.”––Female

“Yes, I was just calling in response to the comment about no jobs being in Bay Springs. Uh, even in the paper this current week, there is a listing the Hol-Mac is employing over 500 skilled employees. So, that’s a lot of jobs available right there. I think they key is that we have to have skilled employees and these kids are not getting education. They are not going to be skilled employees so therefore there’ll be no jobs. So, I encourage everyone, if you are looking for a job, just get a skill and be willing to work. Thanks.” ––Female

“I wanted to call and voice my opinion on the supervisor’s race of Beat Four. It’s a shame that one candidate resorted to such negatives tactics in order to try and gain that edge in the race. Tactics like, um, sending out anonymous letters to try to attempt to hurt families and cause racial division and tactics like distributing alcohol at campaign stops. Is this what we want from our supervisors? I pray it’s not and I urge each of you to go and vote in the run-off election on August the 23rd. Let your answer be heard loud and clear.”––Female

“What was on Bob’s mind when he started driving the red truck on a regular basis knowing that he did not have a valid driver’s license. The smart thing to do was to let his friend drive him around. A real friend would never have let him leave from the party intoxicated and rive off putting his life and our lives in danger.”––Male (written message)

“I was disappointed to see Aldermen Cook on the front page again for some of the same charges as in 2007. He asked my family to give home a second chance and we voted him back in. He needed more years on the state retirement and he did not have a job. Our family knows he has not changed from his old ways. Will he want another chance when it is election time again? ––Female (written message)

“To the Jasper County News Talk Back. Some people in the community feel that it is terrible that the Jasper County News had Bob Cook on the front page and the charges could have been just listed in the jail docket. Cook feels he can’t be touched because he is an alderman. People on the national level is put in the paper when they do wrong. I applaud the paper for the article. Bob did this to himself.” ––Female (written message)

“Regarding Supervisors Board meeting, we need to be careful in what we repeat from someone else, by let it be known that the Vossburg voting precinct need to be made handicapped accessible, a good move for handicapped people, it may not get fix in time for August voting, but I thank it show that with all the storm, rain, win and heat, someone is trying to make things comfortable if possible.
I can’t help but wonder who was in this meeting, to say wheather [sic] or not this request had or had not been brought up before. I noted that it was stated that “Supervisor Curtis Gray left the room to call Prentiss Henley.” ––Female (written message)
––––––––––––––––––––
“I have two questions. Number one, where did the big windfall come from all of a sudden right after election time to overlay at least two of the roads in Beat One that people have been complaining about for years? Question number two: I wonder what kind of tricks our sheriff has up his sleeve right here at election year this time. Perhaps another drug bust like last election? Thank you.”––Female
––––––––––––––––––––
“Yes, I’d like to comment on the Talk Back about the supervisors spending money on the voting precinct. I think they should be able to do that. After all, Hol-Mac’s been tax exempt since 1965. I guess they’re not ever gonna make enough money to pay their taxes.”––Female
––––––––––––––––––––
“Yes, it’s time for people to get up in arms about spending, spending, spending. When we read the paper where we’re spending $800,000 for a Laurel contractor to fix bridges and you say it’s not coming out of the tax payers’ pockets. Just who do you think pays federal taxes and where do you think the money is gonna come from? We need to make industry pay their taxes. We need to quit building bridges that probably do not even need fixing in the first place. Thank you.”–– Female
––––––––––––––––––
“Yes, I’d like to comment about the learning center we’re building to train three or four hundred people to work. First thing I’d like to ask is, why do we have to spend on a new building? We’ve got two old Hol-Mac buildings on Highway 15. We’ve got a Dalex building and we’ve got a goat barn. Why don’t we utilize some of the buildings we have sitting around we’ve already built? And when you get ‘em trained, just where are they gonna go to work at? Could it be Peco or the dollar store? ‘Cause there’s no where to work around here. Thank you.” –– Female

“Yes, I’d like to know, I live on County Road 23 on the south end, and they are replacing the water line and cutting the water off and everything. How come we’re not under a boil water notice? Thank you.”––Male
–––––––––––––––––––––
“I’m calling in reference to County Road 23 at the Antioch Community. Uh, what the, uh, supervisor has done now to the end, closest to 18, is good, just come up there and finish filling in all the holes, ruts and everything, so we don’t have to keep dodging them before somebody hits somebody else and somebody gets hurt. Finish our road out to other end, just like you did the beginning of the road. But at least put a thicker coating of blacktop on it so it’ll last for a while. Thank you.”––Female

“Regarding ‘Friction in the Supervisors’ Board meeting,’ I definitely believe it’s necessary to make the voting precinct in Vossburg handicapped accessible before the August 2 election. I don’t know what else is included in the $25,500 bid, but I think Hayes and Helms were foolish to make and second this motion without considerable discussion by the board. I guess Helms has nothing to lose since he’s not running for reelection, but we all lose if we have to suffer another tax increase. Thank you.”––Female
––––––––––––––––––––
“About the supervisor’s meeting, I’d like to say I think it was absurd for Supervisor Hayes to leave the board meeting to call Fire Chief Henley. Would one expect Henley to say ‘No, thanks”? The board of supervisors is responsible for every penny of the property taxes and other fees that we pay into Jasper County. It should be mandatory to have a request such as this made in person before the entire board or at least have a written request signed by an official person. I agree with what Curtis Gray said. It’s not a good time to spend this money. Why didn’t we speak up before the vote? Aren’t there restrictions regarding what supervisors are allowed to spend right before election? If you must omit part of this, please make it the line beginning with “It should be mandatory,” even though it should, and/or the line beginning with “Would one expect.” And I appreciate the opportunity to Talk Back. Thanks.”––Female
Editor’s note: Supervisor Gray left the room to call Prentiss Henley.
